Ouderkerk aan den Amstel

In Ouwerkerk aan den Amstel, there is a movable bridge over the Amstel River on the N522.

What is the problem?

• At the end of 2023, it was determined that the bridge's rotating mechanism did not fully meet requirements and that some connections were not strong enough to support the weight of the bridge. The mechanism was temporarily reinforced in March 2024, but it was decided that a permanent solution was necessary. Therefore, the Province of North Holland will carry out repair work between September 1, 2025, and the end of March 2026 to thoroughly address the rotating mechanism.

What does the work entail?

• A temporary auxiliary bridge will be placed on top of the existing bridge to absorb the weight and vibrations of traffic, ensuring safe traffic flow during the repair work. Car traffic will remain possible (at a reduced speed of 30 km/h) during the work, but weekend and night closures are planned for the installation/removal of the auxiliary bridge. Janson Bridging was asked to supply this temporary auxiliary bridge from their inventory of bridge equipment. A 15.7-meter bridge with a standard ramp element on both sides was chosen.

In phase 1, the bridge will be installed on the northern section. In phase 2, the same bridge will then be placed over the southern span.
